Lori -- how many days do you cross-train? I think the time I was in the BEST shape I biked 2 times a week and did yoga 2 times... not to mention running 4-5 times a week. Not that young anymore so not sure I could keep up with that kind of schedule!
Shel--Currently I've been so driven by this marathon, I have not done enough crosstraining. (I can tell too--I've had more problems.) My best cross training has been during triathlon training because obviously, it's about 3 disciplines to begin with. At one point I was doing 12 workouts a week. I didn't feel "guilty" for neglecting a run. Most importantly, I recovered from workouts quicker! I notice it's harder to recover from workouts when they are all runs! (Oh, how I love running though!) Anyway,I would run, swim, bike (or spin), elliptical machine, walk, do kettlebells and other weight training. (resistance bands, sand bags, pylometrics) Currently, I might get one crosstraining workout in. I miss it. The older I get, the more I see variety in workouts being ideal. Yes, I'm getting very excited about my upcoming marathon--and nervous too!
Marathon Maniac #161
I'm a 40 year old mother of 2 daughters. I've completed 18 marathons(with a PR of 3:57), a handful of 1/2 marathons and two endurance duathlons. I started this hobby right after my first daughter was born. It's been my sanity! Just coming back from a hiatus -- and it's a slow comeback, but I'll get there!

Good article Shel. I know I've had far fewer injuries when I've cross-trained.
